After being drafted in the seventh round of the 2012 draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, the road to becoming the starting tackle for the New York Jets has been anything but easy for 28-year-old Kelvin Beachum. At the 5th Annual Kelvin Beachum Football Camp, he started the event by speaking of another road not easily traveled by women and children in Honduras and other countries across the world who have to walk extreme distances every day just to get clean water. An inaugural lap around his former Mexia Highschool track with huge jugs of water ensued just to remind everyone how lucky we are to have such a simple luxury.
According to his friends and former teammates, it has always been in Beachum’s nature to bring awareness to these types of issues as well as make an impact in his community, which is exactly what he was doing at his free football camp this past Saturday, May 5th, for children from 1stto 12thgrade. For the fifth year in a row, kids from all over Texas traveled to Mexia, Texas, Beachum’s hometown which is about forty miles east of Waco, to enjoy a day full of football, learning, and most importantly fun. “Beachum has always been a sharing type of person, giving. He’s always been the type of guy you can rely on and that’s what he brings to the community,” said San Francisco 49ers wide receiver and Beachum’s former teammate at SMU, Aldrick Robinson, who along with many others made the long trip out to Mexia to coach and teach the young and eager kids who showed up to the camp. “He makes everything around him better. He does a great job and I just see more and more out of him every year”.
POWERHANDZ teamed up with Kelvin to get some of the campers to train with the POWERHANDZ weighted/anti-grip football gloves and the MVPs of the camp even received a free pair to take home and train with.
When asked how he balances his training with making a positive influence in his community and across the world Beachum said, “You make time for what you care about. This is something we’ve been planning for months and this is the fifth year we’ve done it so we’ve gotten more efficient every year. I’m really excited about where we’ve gotten at this point.” POWERHANDZ was very lucky to have the opportunity to partner up with Kelvin and Train with Purpose at such an amazing event that will only be bigger and better next year.
